‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s journey from gurney to goals with the Basque club

The debut appearance the Spanish forward competed in English soil, an 18-year-old appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in September 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he took the field in the country, against the Black Cats weeks after, he scored. Another occasion, against the Citizens six weeks after that, well, he did it once more. When he returned to the city to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, too. “Truly,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: he was replaced.

“I got well angry,” the forward admits, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I don’t know about Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain the validity, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the brief trip to Loiu airport and another trip to Britain, this time to face Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a difficult season for Athletic, partially owing to the requirements of being here. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a domestic final by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are unique and returning after absence in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.

The player believed it hard enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. As the child of the one-time rival player the former professional and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured the coach, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could earn his place, making his comeback to experience the peak of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the UCL.

“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but each step you progress through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in six games between his bow and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.

“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a turning point because it shifted the outlook. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Training, prehab. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, address that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: do them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players countless occasions. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved upset in that year, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and when eventually the requirement appears in your position, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”

No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after last year which, on occasions, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with 16 in 2023-24, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
