Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
