In a decisive runoff election, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.
A Commanding Win
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his unwavering Catholic views and praise for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to tackle increasing insecurity and significantly reduce migration.
He frequently cited foreigners, notably the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the race, he gave an stern warning for them to depart before the inauguration or face removal.
His policy ideas included controversial measures such as constructing detention centers, barriers, security fences, and strengthening the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Regional Trend
Numerous observers see Kast's success as aligning with a larger rightward shift in the region, coming after recent political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other analysts also view it as a continuation of the predictable swing of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Clear Majority
Despite his decisive popular vote win, Kast will not hold an overall majority in parliament, not in the lower house or the Senate, even when various right-leaning parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation may challenge his plans, including a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to offered a clear explanation.
"There are many questions about what a Kast administration will operate that are uncertain because he has not detailed how he will achieve them," noted a political science analyst.
The analyst stated, "Regarding the economy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures common for the right-wing. However where there is far less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue during the campaign."
