Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.
He remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once presided over Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood the economist's decision to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the company remarked.
Political Context
This development comes after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would compel the federal prosecutors to release its documents on the case.
The bill will afterward proceed to the office of the White House for signature. Trump has stated he expects to sign the bill, after reversing his stance on the issue following pressure from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-related messages released by the legislative panel days ago referenced several well-known personalities in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The emails showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with he often trying to connect the academic to notable world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the general audience, the former official stated he assumed "total ownership for my misguided choice to continue interacting with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish trust and mend connections with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He led Harvard from five years and remains a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he stated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington where he was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was ceased to be connected with the organization.
He entered the leadership of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
