Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Secure Nostalgic Win Over Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” rang out around the ground as Forest fans celebrated a further success against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has occurred since Francis's winning header clinched the continental trophy back in 1979, but the club still treasure those glorious moments. Equally, major shifts have taken place in the five weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with Forest appearing refreshed and securing a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of progressing in the European competition.
Building Momentum with Third Straight Victory
For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had not played for nearly a month after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – represented a third consecutive triumph across every tournament and added to the momentum generated from last weekend’s success at Anfield. While this fixture was a re-run of the club's historic success in name, the encounter itself was devoid of any significant jeopardy or nerves.
It proved to be an event dripping in nostalgia, an longed-for meeting and the third clash between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.
Forest fully embraced the heritage, honoring the legends of that era by providing them, along with their visiting opponents, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's squad from that time were additionally in attendance. The two clubs enjoyed a meal together before the match. Forest legends and company were given a tumultuous reception when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a characteristically superb display was unveiled in the home stand.
Remembering History
“May 30, 1979, Robertson delivered the ball from the left,” read half of a large tifo, in block capitals. While no one required a reminder of what happened next, the rest was revealed as the players came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second stunning tifo depicted Clough watching proceedings beside his right-hand man Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.
Control from the Outset
So, Forest had soaked up those beautiful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an effort off target inside two minutes and built a 2-0 lead by the break. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.
It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined the club aged eight, made the first dent in the visitors' defense led by their own academy product skipper, Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford FC. The home centre-back Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a defender and into the path of Yates, who finished right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to register his first goal since last March.
Another Goal Confirms Control
The scorer was involved in the team's second goal on the brink of half-time, too, his free header parried by the shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to tap in the loose ball from point-blank range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and just his second appearance since September, was the spark, chipping a perfect ball towards Yates at the far post.
A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s driven shot was deflected wide off the defender Rösler, son of ex- Man City forward Uwe, and an unmarked the defender had earlier had a strong header smartly repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the ex- Villa goalkeeper Olsen.
Opponent's Struggles
This was the Swedish side's initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal the home team's intensity. Forest made it 3-0 when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.
Forest then went for the jugular, with the winger chipping a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic shot wide from 30 yards. It was one of those evenings. The manager, aware of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, made seven changes from the team that stunned Liverpool at their ground last weekend, when they also netted three times, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.
Smooth Evening for the Team
It turned out to be a flawless night for Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the match long since sewn up and later brought on teenage defender Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. He talked about the Forest old guard supplying “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the current crop showed they are capable of a few nuggets of excitement, too.
