At least 64 individuals died in a police operation targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.

Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

State officials said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Community members have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.
