Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades Despite Leading Abusive Chants About Manager Wilder
The striker has joined Sheffield United just seven months following starting disrespectful taunts targeting their manager, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, without a club after departing from Leeds United, has agreed to a contract with the second-tier strugglers until January. Bamford's lengthy career at Elland Road was ended amicably in August.
One of Bamford’s final notable acts as a Leeds player was to lead abusive songs about Wilder during Leeds' promotion celebrations in April. Currently, the former England player will be playing for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss looks to rescue his beloved club away from the drop zone.
Previous History Between the Striker & the Manager
The pair had history before Leeds earned promotion back to the Premier League the previous campaign while Sheffield United lost the playoff final to Sunderland. Wilder called the forward as “a muppet” when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and Sheffield United won direct promotion while Leeds United fell short in the playoffs.
Reconciliation and Moving Forward
Everything seems to have been forgiven and forgotten with Sheffield United, the league's least productive attack, in desperate need of a boost in attack while Bamford looking to resurrect his playing days.
The Wilder chant gained traction this spring. An apologetic Patrick and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the next day.
Wilder commented at the time: “Spoke with Pat yesterday and I’ve no problem at all with that. I’m not sure regarding the language from a fellow professional! However I appreciated and admired him calling me.
“We had a short while and the same again I talked with Daniel as well and had a longer discussion with him and he is a great person, a class act. When I was playing we used to give it and take it and that is part and parcel of football at every level, including a Sunday morning. I have no problem at all. I'm fine with the situation and I said that to Pat.”
