The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man squad, indicating there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several past matches.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.
However McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
