A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the video.

We are verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
