UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
