Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that potentially carries the means to overcome him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day fundamentally changed. From then on, he struggles with the control of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
