Extreme heat and intense bushfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures forecast to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the south-west.

These conditions come after recent bushfires in New South Wales, which resulted in the loss of properties and fatalities. Intense heatwave warnings have also been activated for later this week in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, delivering intense heat to much of the region.

The mix of extremely dry land and unbroken heat creates a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.

Elsewhere, a major city was left in darkness recently after powerful gusts damaged the city’s power grid, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant travel disruption at a key airport, where hundreds of air services were cancelled. Severe damage to power systems is anticipated to create ongoing issues as utility companies scramble to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its sunny weather and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest weeks on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which typically lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, holding the mercury at a key transport hub under 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by unprecedented autumn precipitation that left the ground waterlogged.
